Everything After Midnight is a band that has grown in strength and confidence since its formation four years ago. This show was a showcase for the release of their new single “I Guess,” and was promoted by Mr. The gifted P on Northern Radar. How Does Everything Perform After Midnight? You’ll need to read on to find out because there were two great backing bands, which I had never seen before. Starting with PH7, they started out like ’60s Fleetwood Mac but with more Heather Baron-Gracie (Pale Waves) vocals. It wouldn’t be easy to fit PH7 into any given genre and they have some great songs. “Annoyance” is the ace. Their cover of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” is really cool and rocks out louder than Chris Martin and company have ever done. The PH7 guitarist was great, but sadly he left the band. If you get a chance to see PH7 in person, take it!
Next up, it was the amazingly named Mollie Coddled. If you can imagine Cydi Lauper fronting a jazz-funk/post-punk mix then you might come close to Mollie Coddled’s sound to me. The sound and bass playing is huge and skillful. Sadly, just as PH7’s guitarist, bass player Mollie Coddled will be leaving, this being her last appearance. “Guilty Journey” gives me Hooray For The Riff Raff and Bran Van 3000 vibes. Meanwhile, “Lonely Bitch” is like a 60s girl group and punk crossover, like an early classic Blondie.
Finally, the time has come for the future legend known as Everything After Midnight. They took the stage as the merry and jolly theme from The Simpsons played. That’s definitely their musical walk-on, isn’t it, considering the poster for the show. The big question was whether Lisa Simpson might have played the saxophone for them, sadly she didn’t, but maybe another time. It’s an incredibly imaginative set that borders on epic in both style and content. The band was at their best and displayed immense control and mastery of the depth and dynamics of their sound. Everything After Midnight continues to develop a distinct blend of musical styles and influences with which they created the distinctive and distinctive Soundscape After Midnight. They have matured relatively quickly for a band, and remain tough, or more likely, impossible to fall easily into certain genre boxes. There’s alt. folk, electric folk, prog, post-punk, classic rock, and even some melodies that wouldn’t be out of place in classical sheet music.
Jacob’s guitar playing moved from Mick Ronson to Johnny Marr and many things in between. Then there’s Steph’s soaring and confident vocals, she has come a long way as a singer since I first saw the band in February 2022. On this set, I felt she had the sweetness and clarity of a Sandy Denny voice and in the heavier moments like Kiki Dee on steroids or Lulu as a metal band vocalist. The highlights are many and abundant, but among the greats “Real Estate” and new single “I Guess”, stands out for me. Check out this band NOW, that’s an order!
